Why he might be annoying:

He staged scenes where several characters talk at the same time, making it difficult to tell what they're saying.
He was twice divorced, with three children between his two ex-wives.
He was a hard drinker early in his career.
He started in television but later disparages the medium, including the TV adaptation of 'M*A*S*H.'
Since the early '80s he had a reputation of being arrogant and difficult to work with.
It is rumored that he had a fist fight with a studio executive over the editing of 'Nashville.'

He was been married to his third wife for over 40 years.
