Author/environmentalist
Best known for the memoir 'Desert Solitaire' (1968) and the novel 'The Monkey Wrench Gang' (1975)
Also wrote the novels 'Jonathan Troy' (1954), 'The Brave Cowboy' (1956), 'Fire on the Mountain' (1962), 'Black Sun' (1971), 'Good News' (1980), 'Fool's Progress' (1988) and 'Hayduke Lives' (1989)
Other non-fiction works include 'Appalachian Wilderness' (1970), 'Cactus Country' (1973), 'The Journey Home' (1977), 'Down the River' (1982) and 'One Life at a Time, Please' (1988)

Why he might be annoying:

'The Monkey Wrench Gang' inspired eco-sabotage groups like the Earth Liberation Front.
He was investigated by the FBI for encouraging people to destroy their draft cards (1947).
He threw beer cans out his car window, on the grounds that the highway itself was already littering the landscape.
He hated having 'trendy campus people' as his main fans.

Why he might not be annoying:

He fell in love with the West working as a ranger at Arches National Park in Utah.
Author Larry McMurtry called him 'The Thoreau of the American West.'
He was a gun rights advocate.
After his death from complications following surgery, his friends fulfilled his last wishes by burying him at an undisclosed location in the Arizona desert.
He wrote, 'Society is like a stew. If you don't stir it up every once in a while, a layer of scum floats to the top.'
