    Died of lung cancer at age 60

Why he might be annoying:

    He smoked.
    He said of his scenes with M*A*S*H co-star Loretta Swit, 'We were Mutt and Jeff, Roadrunner and Coyote, whatever, we were a proper pair.'
    Because he portrayed his character so well many thought he was a jerk in real life.
    His M*A*S*H character's nickname 'ferret face' was coined by his own brother.
    After five years (1972-77) he refused to renegotiate his M*A*S*H contract because he felt couldn't do anything more with the character.
    He married four times and divorced thrice.
    He was in a 10-10-321 commercial with Tom Bosley and Marion Ross (1998).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He studied aeronautical engineering at the University of Colorado.
    He had a life long passion for glider planes, designing and building his own.
    He was one of three Americans among 300 applicants selected for a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.
    He based his Frank Burns character on 'Every idiot I've ever known.'
    He was well liked by his M*A*S*H co-stars and was very good friends with Gary Burghoff.
    He said of those who worked in actual M*A*S*H units, 'It was humbling to think of the real doctors who sometimes operated on more than 150 patients in a day.'
    He had surgery to remove part of his lung after doctors found a malignant tumor under his sternum (February 12, 1998).
