The Resume

    (January 3, 1910-August 18, 1992)
    Born in Oak Park, Illinois
    Middle name was Eliot
Directed ‘Bad Day at Black Rock (1955),’ ‘Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957),’ ‘The Old Man and the Sea (1958),’ ‘The Magnificent Seven (1960),’ ‘The Great Escape (1963),’ and ‘Ice Station Zebra (1968)’
    No relation to Preston Sturges

Why he might be annoying:

He was known for losing control of his actors on the films he directed.
He was replaced by George Cukor as director on ‘Wild is the Wind.’
He feuded with screenwriter Walter Newman working on ‘Magnificent Seven’ and ‘The Great Escape’ (and had his credit removed from both films before their release).
His overall output was inconsistent, alternately churning out hits and flops one after the other.

Why he might not be annoying:

He directed documentaries and training films as a captain in the US Army during World War II.
He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for ‘Bad Day at Black Rock’ in 1956.
He was awarded the Golden Boot Award in 1992 for his lifetime contribution to Westerns.
‘Magnificent Seven’ and ‘Bad Day at Black Rock’ were selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
He considered it the highest compliment when Akira Kurosawa told him he loved The Magnificent Seven - which was a remake of his ‘Seven Samurai’ (he sent the director a ceremonial sword as a thank you gift).
