Football Coach

The Resume

    (February 23, 1937- )
US Member of Congress (R-Nebraska, January 2001-January 2007)
    Head Coach, Nebraska Cornhuskers (1973-97)
Tight End, Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers (1959-61)
National College Football Hall of Fame member (1998)
Coach of three national champion teams (1994, 95, 97)

Why he might be annoying:

He retired from football to be with his family and because of health concerns, then announced he was running for Congress.
In order to be eligible for Nebraska's Third District congressional seat, he listed his fishing lodge as his residence (Lincoln is in the Second District).
He is leaving Congress to run for governor of Nebraska, and messed up a tight Republican election strategy.
He was a failure as a NFL receiver.
He was an unpaid assistant coach his first year at Nebraska (1962).
He thought he could make Lawrence Phillips behave like a rational human being.
He lost five straight times to Oklahoma, often by very close margins.
Until the 1990's, no one thought he could win big games.

Why he might not be annoying:

He humiliated Steve Spurrier and Florida 62-24 in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl for the national championship--with an option attack!
His 1995 team is generally considered to be the greatest college football team of all time.
While an assistant coach, he earned his doctorate in educational psychology and taught classes.
He stayed at Nebraska, despite many offers from NFL teams.
When he finally beat Oklahoma in 1978, he upset what many people considered the greatest Sooner team of all time.
His going for two points against Miami in the 1984 Orange Bowl was the gutsiest call in college football history.
His roommate with the 49ers was Jack Kemp.
Keith Jackson referred to him as the Riverboat Gambler because of his love of bizarre trick plays.
He has proven to be an able politician.
    Nebraskans worship him.
