He fell into alcoholism after his retirement from soccer.

Nicknamed 'The Black Marvel,' he became the world's first international soccer star who was a man of color.
He led Uruguay to garnering back-to-back Olympic gold medals in football (1924 and 1928).
A collision with a goal post during the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics caused an eye injury that eventually left him blind.
On the pitch, he was known for his intelligent, fast playing style.
