    Wrote 'Families in Peril' (1987), 'The Measure of Our Success' (1992), 'Guide My Feet' (1995), 'The State of America's Children' (2000) and 'The Sea Is So Wide and My Boat Is So Small' (2008)
    Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2000)

    She said one of the reasons she moved from civil rights to children's advocacy was 'The country was tired of the concerns of the sixties. When you talked about poor people or black people you faced a shrinking audience.'
    She received over a hundred honorary degrees.
    She blogs for the Huffington Post.
    Hillary Clinton considered her a mentor until they had a falling out over Bill's support for welfare reform. ('Hillary Clinton is an old friend, but they are not friends in politics.')

    She advocates for youth pregnancy prevention, child-care funding, prenatal care, childhood immunization and greater parental responsibility.
    She said, 'If you don’t like the way the world is, you have an obligation to change it. Just do it one step at a time.'
