    Wrote the novels 'The Living and the Dead' (1941), 'The Aunt's Story' (1948), 'The Tree of Man' (1955), 'Voss' (1957), 'Rider in the Chariot' (1961), 'The Solid Mandala' (1966), 'The Vivisector' (1970), 'The Eye of the Storm' (1973), 'A Fringe of Leaves' (1976), 'The Twyborn Affair' (1979) and 'Memoirs of Many in One' (1981)
    Wrote the plays 'Season at Sarsparilla' (1962), 'Big Toys' (1977), 'Signal Driver: A Morality Play for the Times' (1982) and 'Shepherd on the Rocks' (1987)
    Wrote the autobiography 'Flaws in the Glass' (1981)
    Won the Nobel Prize for Literature (1973)
    He called his time at an English boarding school 'a four-year prison sentence.'
    He refused to go to Stockholm to accept his Nobel Prize in person.
    When he was named Australian of the Year (1973), he said, 'This year I was picked as they had run through all the swimmers, tennis players and yachtsmen.'
    He was such a die-hard anti-royalist that he refused to attend the premier of an opera based on his novel 'Voss' because Queen Elizabeth II had been invited.
    He said he wasted his life writing and should have stuck with 'learning to cook properly.'
    He served as an intelligence officer during World War II.
    He and Manoly Lascaris were life partners for 49 years until White's death.
    He used his Nobel Prize money to establish an award for Australian writers who had yet to receive public recognition.
