Why he might be annoying:

He designed a plane for luxury touring, of which only three were built.
He stopped racing on land after seeing another driver die in a crash trying to break his record – and took up the hardly safer pursuit of the water speed record.
He did not get much time to savor the new water speed record.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a pilot during World War I.
He was the first racer to wear a crash helmet.
He was the first driver to exceed 200 miles per hour.
He was the first person to hold the land and water speed records simultaneously.
