He joined the army to avoid a scandal after being charged with larceny.
He claimed his tropical landscapes were inspired by his service in Mexico, but actually he never left France.
He worked as a tax collector.
He did not begin painting seriously until his forties.
Many critics of the day dismissed his paintings as childlike.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the sole support for his widowed mother.
Two of his children died in infancy.
He was self-taught.
He became a favorite of the early 20th century avant-garde, including artists Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse and authors Alfred Jarry and Guillaume Apollinaire.
