Why he might be annoying:

He frequently wore a ridiculous metal helmet.
His gang (accidentally) shot innocent people during the course of robberies.
He was eventually captured and hanged, but some of his gang members committed suicide.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is a folk hero of Australian history.
He was seen by many as a Robin Hood figure who stole from rich, greedy bankers.
He was famous for carrying out fantastical, ballsy plans.
He once rounded up 60 townspeople into the dining room of a hotel and read them an 8000-word autobiography and justification of his acts.
His gang once captured a small town's constable, imprisoned him in his own jail, and then had drinks with the locals, even competing in a hop-step-and-jump competition!
He managed to run by foot and ride a horse speedily while wearing 90 pounds of bullet-proof plate armor.
At his trial, after sentenced to hang, he said to the judge: 'I'll see you where I'm going.' 12 days later, the judge died.
