    Conducted scores for 'The Long Hot Summer' (1958), 'Cleopatra' (1963), 'The Sand Pebbles' (1965), 'Planet of the Apes' (1968), 'The Omen' (1976) and 'Alien' (1979)
    Musical supervisor for the original 'Star Wars' trilogy
    Wrote the pop standard 'Again'
    Brother of Alfred Newman
    Uncle of Randy Newman and Thomas Newman

Why he might be annoying:

    When he conducted for Mae West's vaudeville show, she scolded him for moving his hands too much, saying 'I'm the show, Newman, not you.'
    He was hired by 20th Century Fox through the influence of brother Alfred.
    Army Archerd admonished him for swearing during his Oscar acceptance speech.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was good friends with Marilyn Monroe, who insisted that he conduct the orchestra for her films at Fox.
    Frank Sinatra called him one of the funniest men in Hollywood.
    He established a scholarship for young conductors.
