    (1826-February 8, 1884)
    Born in Mlambongwenya, Zululand
    Nephew of Shaka
King of the Zulus (1873-1879, 1883-1884)
His name is also spelled Cetawayo, Cetewayo, Cetywajo and Ketchwajo.
His name translates as 'the slandered one,' referring to rumors about his legitimacy spread by his uncle, King Dingane.
He killed his younger brother in battle.
A Norwegian missionary described him as 'an able man, but for cold, selfish pride, cruelty and untruthfulness, worse than any of his predecessors.'
He lost a war to Great Britian (1879) and was deposed and exiled.
He tried to avoid war with the British until they demanded that he disband his nation's army.
At the Battle of Isandlwana, his forces inflicted on Britain one of their worst defeats by a native army.
When Zululand erupted into civil war after the British take-over, the British returned him to the throne in a futile try for stability.
He officially died from a heart attack but may have been poisoned.
