U.S. Senator

The Resume

    (February 9, 1946- )
    Born in St. Joseph, Missouri
Birth name is James Henry Webb, Jr.
Graduated the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland (1968)
Served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War
Earned the Navy Cross (1969), the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts
Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs (1984-1987)
U.S. Secretary of the Navy (1987-1988)
Author of the novel 'Fields of Fire (1978)' and the non-fiction book 'Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America (2004)'
Storywriter and executive producer for 'Rules of Engagement (2000)'
Democratic Senator from Virginia (January 2007-January 2013)
    Of Scots-Irish descent
    Non-denominational Protestant
Delivered Democrats' response to President Bush's 2007 State of the Union address (January 23, 2007)

Why he might be annoying:

He wrote a 1979 article titled 'Women Can't Fight' where he referred to the men-to-women ratio in the U.S. Naval Academy's co-ed dorms as a 'horny woman's dream.'
That article reportedly caused hostility and harassment toward female students at the Naval Academy.
    He is twice divorced.
He has a gruff demeanor in public.
His novel 'Fields of Fire (1979)' contains very graphic material such as pedophilia and degradation of women, as well as lots of racial epithets.
He lasted less than a year as Secretary of the Navy.
He endorsed George Allen in the 2000 Senate election, then ran against him in 2006.
In the 2006 Senate election, he narrowly beat Allen by approximately 7,000 votes.
In November 2006, 27 years after 'Women Can't Fight,' he made his article-writing comeback with 'Class Struggle.' He claimed that certain racial or ethnic groups don't have what it takes to make it in the United States. (The keywords are 'right genetics').
On November 28, 2006, he had a verbal exchange with President George W. Bush about his son Jimmy (a Marine Lance Corporal serving in Iraq at that time), reportedly saying he wanted to 'slug' the President.

Why he might not be annoying:

He comes from a military family that fought in every major American war.
He graduated the Naval Academy in the same class as Oliver North.
    He served in Vietnam.
He earned a law degree at Georgetown University.
He represented military vets from 1977 to 1981 pro-bono (without pay).
He resigned as Secretary of the Navy due to budget cuts.
His third wife Hong Le escaped Vietnam after the fall of Saigon.
He regrets the 'Women Can't Fight' article and is accepting of women in the military.
He flipped from Republican to Democrat, because he had enough of the Iraq War and the economic situation ('the war on the middle class').
He said that Hollywood needs to break away from stereotypical movie villains.
During the 2006 Senate campaign, he wore his son Jimmy's combat boots in tribute to him and 'all the people sent into harm's way.'
He is not your daddy's Democrat, opposing such things as gun control and political correctness.
He won his first elected office on the first try with the 2006 Senate win.
He seriously supports the military, wanting to establish a GI Bill of Rights for post-9/11 military vets.
He lost his urge to slug the President after hearing the 2007 State of the Union address.
