Retired June 1, 1973
Died at age 29, cremated and laid to rest on the parade ground at Fort Myer, with commemorative plaque marking his burial site

Why he might be annoying:

His bloodline and breeding were unknown.
He was a gelding (who didn't have a say in the matter).
Some folks mistakenly called him Blackjack, running the words together similar to the casino card game.
Called an 'equine hero,' he never saw battle - he just marched in military funerals, riderless, with boots backwards in his stirrups, indicating a fallen comrade.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a participant in four state funerals - those of John F. Kennedy (1963), Gen. Douglas MacArthur (1964), Herbert Hoover (1964) and Lyndon B. Johnson (1973).
Many remember his 'professional demeanor' during the JFK funeral procession televised around the world (marching between the casket and the limo carrying Jacqueline Kennedy).
Ironically, he arrived for duty at Fort Myer 10 years to the day prior to Kennedy's assassination.
He was the last horse issued by the Quartermaster to the U.S. Army, and the last to carry its insignia branded on all army horses.
He was one of only two horses buried with full military honors (the other being Little Big Horn survivor Comanche).
