    Born in Paris, France
    Directed ‘A propos de Nice’ (1929), ‘Taris, roi de l’eau’ (1930), ‘Zero de conduite’ (1933) and ‘L’Atlante’ (1934)
    His father was a prominent militant anarchist.
    His first film was financed by his father-in-law.
    His films were frequently banned and censored by the French government.
    When he was 12, his father was strangled to death in prison under mysterious circumstances.
    He had to go to boarding school under an assumed name.
    He was a major influence on the French ‘new wave’ in film.
    ’L’Atlante’ was named one of the 10 greatest films of all time in polls by ‘Sight and Sound’ in 1962 and 1992.
