    Founded the conservative think tanks the Heritage Foundation (1973) and Free Congress Foundation (1974)
    He coined the term ‘Moral Majority.'
    He called Trent Lott a traitor to the conservative cause when Lott backed a Clinton treaty on chemical weapons.
    While discussing the Mark Foley scandal, he said homosexuals are ‘preoccupied with sex.'
    He advocated reviving the House Un-American Activities Committee to identify Communists in the media (2006).
    He was an advocate of rail mass transit.
    He went public with his concerns about John Tower's drinking and womanizing, commenting, ‘It does no good, either for the individual or the community, to overlook or conceal the immorality of public figures.'
    He joined the ACLU in criticizing the Justice Department's attempts to monitor people's internet use, church affiliation and library records (2002).
    Complications from a fall required the amputation of his legs (2005).
