The Resume

    (2002- )
Official name is Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'Awati Wal-Jihad ('People Committed to the Prophet's Teachings for Propagation and Jihad')
Based in northeast Nigeria with additional activities in Chad, Niger and Cameroon
Muslim fundamentalist terrorist group seeking to overthrow Nigeria's government and install an Islamic state, governed by Sharia law
Founder is Muhammed Yusaf (killed in 2009)
Leader, as of 2015, is Abubakar Shekau (oversees leaders and commanders who communicate orders down the chain of command to foot soldiers)
Second in command is Mamman Nur, mastermind of the 2011 UN Bombing
Responsible for the Abuja United Nations suicide building bombing, which killed 21 and wounded 60 (Aug. 26, 2011)
Comprised of 26 operational cells within Nigeria, each reporting to an individual commander

Why they might be annoying:

Linguists, scholars, and activists still debate over what the hell their name means.
They give further relevance to Islamaphobes like Pamela Gellar.
They slaughtered 42 Catholics on Christmas Day (2011).
They are linked to both Al-Qaeda and the Taliban (and have been characterized as more barbaric than either).
They have slaughtered whole villages, enslaving women and children.
They have also set off lethal explosions in densely populated areas (e.g. killing 18 civilians in a suicide bombing at the entrance to a Baga fish market in 2014).
They have continued the ongoing genocidal assault on the Igbo tribe in Southeast Nigeria, carried on since the 1940s (over 70% of their victims are Igbo).
They have driven over 3 million people from their homes in northeast Africa (most of them pouring into the neighboring Chad), over a period of five years.
They have made it their mission to target schools and, in the first five months of 2014 alone, they attacked over 50 Nigerian schools, killing more than 100 children and 70 teachers.
They presided over the kidnapping of 276 Chibok schoolgirls, shocking the world in the process and triggering the Hashtag campaign, #bringbackourgirls (April 14 -15, 2014).
It remains unclear as to what became of the 276 schoolgirls although it is strongly believed that they were forced to convert to Islam and then were sold into sexual slavery.
They pledged their allegiance to ISIS and 'to the Caliph of the Muslims' in an Arabic audio track with English/French subtitles posted on Twitter, after being driven back by multinational task forces (Mar. 7, 2015).
An <36289 ISIS spokesman subsequently released a video accepting Boko Haram's pledge and expressing their intention to establish a caliphate in West Africa, scaring the hell out of most of the Western world (13 Mar. 2015).
Their pledge generally didn't surprise experts considering their growing tendency to imitate ISIS with beheading videos and Twitter propaganda, and constant shout-outs to ISIS (can you say peer pressure?).

Why they might not be annoying:

Their name sound like the name of legendary 60s rock band, Procol Harum.
They started out as a nonviolent movement in response to poverty, genocide, and government corruption.
They proved the idiocy and ineffectiveness of 'hash-tag activism.'
Their name was incorrectly translated to mean 'Western education is evil,' when there is no such word for 'Western education' in the Hausean language.
More likely, the word 'Boko' translates to mean 'fraud' or 'deception.'
They were outmuscled and driven back by a multi-national coalition, causing them to whore themselves out to ISIS out of desperation.
