World Leader
    (June 16, 1882-March 5, 1967)
    Born in Tehran, Iran
Deputy in the Iranian Parliament, the Majlis (1907-19,1923-25,1944-51)
    Prime Minister of Iran (1951-53)
His last name can also be spelled Mossadeq, Mossaddeq, Mosadeck or Mussaddiq.
One biographer called him 'a shameless hypochondriac.'
He would address the Majlis from his bed, which he had moved into the chambers of Parliament.
He frequently wore pajamas to public functions.
He dissolved Parliament and assumed emergency power to decree laws (August, 1953).
He threatened to go to the Soviet Union for financial help, convincing the Eisenhower administration that he had to go.
He was the first Iranian with a doctorate in law from a European university.
His administration introduced social security, unemployment insurance and workers compensation.
He attempted to nationalize the oil industry after the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company refused a 50-50 profit sharing deal similar to ones American oil companies made with Saudi Arabia.
The ticked-off British eventually persuaded the US to help remove Mossadegh and restore the Shah to power.
He was overthrown in a coup orchestrated by the CIA (August 19, 1953).
He was kept under house arrest for the rest of his life.
He has remained an enduring popular symbol of Iranian nationalism.
