    After the birth of his developmentally disabled son, his novels began featuring characters referred to as the 'idiot son.'
    According to his translator, he attended a party at Yukio Mishima's house and insulted the host.
    The New York Times said that before his Nobel Prize victory he was 'the sort of intellectual, left-leaning author who was well known among brooding Japanese undergraduates and scholars, but was not particularly widely read.'
    He ticked off a lot of Japanese when he turned down the country's highest cultural prize, the Imperial Order of Culture.
    When he was nine, his father drowned during World War II.
    His favorite novel is Mark Twain's 'Huckleberry Finn.'
    When his son Hikari was born with brain damage (1963), doctors encouraged him and his wife to let the child die.
    They refused and Hikari, despite his disabilities, became a successful composer.
    His opposition to Japan's imperial system has resulted in repeated death threats from right-wing extremists.
