Why he might be annoying:

Contrary to popular lore, he – not his son – took his given name from a German philosopher.
He was unable to convince Michael Jr. to return to the site of the infamous Montgomery bus boycott.
As his son’s profile eclipsed his own, he earned the nickname ‘Daddy King.’
He survived his two sons – one assassinated, one drowned – and his wife, shot while playing the organ at Ebenezer Baptist Church (which made it particularly bizarre that he would love those who attacked his nearest and dearest).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the son of sharecroppers.
He was a front-line witness to the Jim Crow South brutalities under the legal reality of ‘separate and anything but equal’ — which included a lynching.
He was almost always able to compromise with his wife on disciplinary tactics toward their children.
Committed to a social gospel, he proposed marching on Atlanta City Hall to announce a black voter registration drive (‘I’ll never step off the road again to let white folks pass’).
Having secured the support of liberals and the civil movement for his Presidency bid in 1976, he was asked by President Carter to deliver invocations at the 1976 and 1980 Democratic National Conventions.
