    Named a Knight Commander of the Order of New Zealand (2009)

Why he might be annoying:

    He was considered short and stocky for a runner.
    His hips were so small, he needed to have his shorts specially tailored to keep from falling down.
    After retiring from sports, he went to work for a tobacco company.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was married to Miki Snell for 55 years.
    He won his age group (65 and older) at the United States Orienteering Championship (2003).
    His former world record time in the 800 meters (set in 1962) remained the fastest time recorded by a New Zealander at the time of his death, and was the oldest national record recognized by World Athletics.
    He was voted New Zealand’s Sports Champion of the Century (2000).
