    (April 1, 1869-December 2, 1918)
    Born in Marseilles, France
Best known play was Cyrano de Bergerac
Also wrote 'La Romanesques' (1894), 'La Princess Iointaine' (1895), 'La Samaritaine' (1897), 'L'Aiglon' (1900) and 'Chantecler' (1910)
He earned a law degree but never practiced as an attorney.
To avoid interruptions, he would write while soaking in the bathtub.
After he was elected to the French Academy, it took him three years to write his acceptance speech.
He found his post-Cyrano fame a burden, calling success 'the cruelest form of human anguish.'
His 'La Romanesques' inspired the long-running off-Broadway play 'The Fantasticks.'
He was a supporter of Alfred Dreyfus.
At 31, he became the youngest writer named to the French Academy.
Coquelin, who would portray Cyrano, was so impressed by his early plays he declared, 'Write a role for me and I'll play it when you want, where you want.'
