Baseball Player
    (June 7, 1933-November 11, 2008)
    Born in Rosedale, New York
Pitcher for the Cleveland Indians (1955-59) and Chicago White Sox (1960-62)
    Two time All-Star (1955-56)
American League Rookie of the Year (1955)
Struck by a line drive, breaking several bones in his face (May 7, 1957)
TV and radio announcer for the Indians (1964-97)
Fearful of being hit again, he altered his pitching motion and was never as dominant again.
In his most famous broadcasting malaprop, he announced, 'This is Herb Score coming to you from Milwaukee County Stadium... Oh, Chicago's Comiskey Park. Wait a minute, I'll get this right. Kansas City's Royals Stadium.'
He was badly injured after running a stop sign into the path of a tractor-trailer truck (October 8, 1998).
His record of striking out 245 batters his rookie season stood for 29 years, until it was topped by Dwight Gooden.
Bob Feller said, 'He would have been probably one of the greatest, if not the greatest, left-handed pitchers that ever lived. He'd probably have been better than Koufax.'
He refused to feel sorry for himself, commenting "I'm a lucky fellow. I'm glad God gave me the ability to throw a baseball well for a few years.'
When Indians owner Nick Mileti said he was planning a complete change of announcers (1973), he was deluged with angry mail from Score fans.
His youngest daughter, Susan, had Down's syndrome and died of heart failure (1994).
