Voice Actor

The Resume

    (August 9, 1923-May 15, 2015)
    Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin
Did voice work for several Hanna-Barbera cartoons
Recurring roles included Mr. Slate in The Flintstones, Fancy-Fancy in 'Top Cat' and Doggie Daddy in 'Augie Doggie'
Non-Hanna-Barbera cartoon work included 'Transformers,' 'Inspector Gadget,' 'Darkwing Duck,' 'Duck Dodgers' and 'Fraggle Rock'
Provided the closing narration on Dragnet (1967-70)
Appeared on screen in episodes of 'I Love Lucy,' 'The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show,' 'Perry Mason,' 'The Beverly Hillbillies,' 'F Troop' and 'Hogan's Heroes'
Appeared in the films 'Day of Triumph' (1954), 'Teenage Rebel' (1956) and 'Herbie Rides Again' (1974)

Why he might be annoying:

His name was sometimes misspelled 'Stevenson' in credits.
He auditioned unsuccessfully for the parts of both Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble.
After the first five episodes of Jonny Quest, he was replaced as Dr. Benton Quest by Don Messick because he sounded too similar to Mike Road as Race Bannon.
He disliked doing his voices at parties, noting 'Some people can turn it on and off. Away from the mic, I don't like to do this.'
He was falsely reported dead two years prematurely (2013).

Why he might not be annoying:

His senior year in high school, he won the Wisconsin state championship in oratory in the National Forensic League, and went on to be national runner-up.
He was a radio operator and gunner in a B-24 bomber in the China theater during World War II.
He was so ubiquitous at Hanna-Barbera that he often was 'literally talking to myself,' such as in one 'Flintstones' episode where he voiced Mr. Slate and eight additional parts.
He provided the voice for some of the more memorable villains in Scooby-Doo's first two seasons. (And he would've gotten away with it, if it wasn't for those meddling kids.)
He did good impressions of Boris Karloff, Joe Flynn, Cary Grant and Paul Lynde.
He joked about the enduring popularity of Hanna-Barbera cartoons, 'If we knew they would last so long, we would have asked for more money.'
