Why he might be annoying
He spent three years living at Timothy Leary's Millbrook Estate, doing LSD and other psychedelic drugs. ('The Millbrook experience turned me on to a wider way of thinking.')
He became a follower of Indian guru Sathya Sai Baba.

Why he might not be annoying
At thirteen, he was a soloist with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Orchestra.
He won Down Beat magazine's readers poll as best trumpeter for three consecutive years (1950-52) and was named to the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame (1992).
He performed at the closing ceremonies of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, where he symbolically 'blew out' the Olympic flame.
