Why he might be annoying:

He got started singing at kassaks, parties that celebrate circumcision.
His album 'Egypt' was boycotted by many of his fellow Muslims, some of whom objected to a pop star singing about his faith, some of whom objected to the album being released during the holy month of Ramadan.
Although big in Europe and downright huge in Africa, in America he is mostly known as 'that guy chanting at the end of Peter Gabriel's 'In Your Eyes.''

Why he might not be annoying:

He organized a concert for the release of Nelson Mandela (1985) and was a featured performer on the Amnesty International Human Rights Now! Tour (1988).
He wrote and recorded the anthem of the 1998 World Cup.
In addition to Peter Gabriel, he has collaborated with Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Paul Simon, Neneh Cherry, Branford Marsalis, Tracy Chapman, Dido and Wyclef Jean.
Rolling Stone wrote, 'If any third-world performer has a real shot at the sort of universal popularity last enjoyed by Bob Marley, it's Youssou, a singer with a voice so extraordinary that the history of Africa seems locked inside it.'
