Sports Executive
He was a journeyman player during his playing career.
During the 1986 NHL All-Star Game, he was incredibly biased towards his team selecting 10 Oilers to fill 1/3 of the Campbell Conference roster.
He was deemed a hypocrite by hockey pundits after he made a point to the media about the Oilers being unable to sign premier players. A year after he made the statement, he accepted the Rangers job offer (2000).
He made foolish personnel decisions and terrible coaching hires in his first five years as the Rangers GM.
He pissed off Ranger fans by trading away franchise mainstays Brian Leetch and Adam Graves for little or nothing in return.
Like his predecessors, he has been accused of failing to develop homegrown prospects within the Rangers system by electing to spend heavily on free agents.
He frequently squanders his first round draft choices on underachieving players.
He was the architect of the Oilers dynasty during the 1980's.
He refused to take credit for the team's success, instead saying that his players deserved more merit then he did.
He was forced to trade away the majority of the players from the 1980's Oiler dynasty as a result of the team's peril into near bankruptcy.
Despite his title as GM, he dodged a major bullet by not being the scapegoat for both Edmonton fans and media following the Wayne Gretzky trade (1988).
Ten years after trading Mark Messier, his first move as the Rangers GM was re-acquring him as a free agent.
After realizing he made major screw-ups during his first four seasons as the Rangers GM, he gave into a rebuilding project, which benefited his team following the lockout.
He frequently gives players who are considered cast-offs by other teams second chances of being NHL regulars.
