Why Tupelo, Mississippi might be annoying:

It was originally known as Gum Pond. (Fortunately, they changed it, sparing us from the possibility of hearing Van Morrison singing that his girl is ‘as sweet as Gum Pond honey.’)
It was the site of one of the deadliest tornados in American history (April 5-6, 1936), with an official death toll of 233. (The actual death toll was probably higher, with many deaths in the segregated city’s black section going unreported.)
Donald Wildmon’s fundamentalist American Family Association is headquartered there.

Why Tupelo, Mississippi might not be annoying:

It was the first city to receive electricity from the Tennessee Valley Authority project (February 7, 1934).
A scale model of its Church Street Elementary School was displayed at the 1939 New York World’s Fair as ‘the ideal elementary school.’
It is the site of Mississippi’s largest zoo, the Tupelo Buffalo Park and Zoo.
It was named an All-America City five times, a record for any city in the Deep South.
It was the birthplace of Elvis Presley.
