Why he might be annoying:

He initially played for the A's under the last name of 'Sullivan' to protect his eligibility for college sports.
He led the AL in errors by a 2nd baseman in 1912 with 38.
During the offseason, he buried his bats in a dunghill to keep them 'alive.'
He turned down a chance to follow Miller Huggins as manager of the Yankees because he hoped to replace Connie Mack as the A's skipper; unfortunately for him, Mack hung on as manager for another two decades.

Why he might not be annoying:

He graduated from Columbia University at a time when few ballplayers attended college at all.
He led the AL in fielding percentage by a 2nd baseman eight times (1909-10,1915-16,1920-22,1924).
During a scouting trip to San Diego, he discovered Ted Williams for the Red Sox.
As of 2011, he remains in the all-time top 10 for both hits (3,315-#10) and stolen bases (744-#6).
