He worked as a hearse driver and slept at the funeral home.
He was nicknamed 'the Tennessee Plowboy.'
He quit the Grand Ole Opry in a dispute over money and would bristle at anyone who suggested the Opry had 'made' his career.
Country purists complained when he added strings to his records.

He was married to Sally Gayhart for 66 years until her death.
He had 145 songs make the country charts, including 28 number one hits.
He said of the string-laden 'Nashville Sound' that he pioneered, 'The artists began to say, 'Aww, he's left us.' Then within a year, they were doing it.'
He said of his clean-cut image, 'Some people think I'm Billy Graham's half-brother, but I'm not.'
