Why he might be annoying:

Like all communist bloc athletes, he was supported financially and subsidized by his government so he could train full-time and didn't have to worry about getting a job to support himself or recruit sponsors.
He has never publicly criticized the communist government that has oppressed his fellow Cubans for decades and has actually been known for publicly sucking up to Cuba's dictator Fidel Castro.
He turned down tens of millions of dollars to turn pro.
Few boxing experts thought he would have been a real threat to the heavyweight title and most thought he would have done particularly poorly against the physically largest professional heavyweights of the 1990's such as Lennox Lewis, Riddick Bowe, or the Klitschko brothers.
He would occasionally hot dog it in the ring to taunt opponents.

Why he might not be annoying:

He won three Olympic gold medals in boxing, a record he shares with fellow Cuban and mentor, Teolfilo Stevenson and Hungary's Lazlo Papp and one that will never be broken.
He is possibly the best and certainly the most decorated amateur boxer in history.
Although usually weighing a little more than two hundred pounds he was actually slightly smaller than most of his opponents, he was able to physically manhandle them with ease.
He inherited Stevenson's lightening fast and incredibly powerful right hand that would knock out even very tough opponents before they ever saw it coming.
His knockout victims read like a who's who of top professional heavyweights in the 90's and 2000's.
Like Stevenson, he was a real hero among the Cuban people and not a phony one forced upon them by their communist government.
He had a wonderful smile and came across as genuinely friendly.
