    His illiteracy affected many of his activities, from grocery shopping to out of town travel.
    He rejected suggestions to use local adult education and literacy resources.
    Some people suggested that his participation in class with young children was inappropriate and unethical.
    He did not have childhood educational opportunities due to his need to work along with his sharecropper family in Tennessee, but he promised his mother that he would someday learn to read.
    He first met teacher Alesia Hamilton while she was teaching one of his friend's children, and he desired Hamilton to teach him reading due to his comfort level with her.
    He considered his media attention and interviews from celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres a blessing from the Lord.
    A St. Joseph resident used a $1000.00 gift card from Oprah Winfrey to buy books for Williams, and Ellen DeGeneres contributed to a fund raising effort to build a home for him.
    One of his favorite books was The Worst Day of My Life by Bill Cosby.
    He was well liked by his classmates and considered a good role model for them.
