Why he might be annoying:

    He collaborated with the Japanese when they occupied Indonesia during World War II.
    His alignment with the Soviet Union and China worried Indonesians who thought that their country would become communist.
    He had ten wives, and was married to four of them simultaneously.
    His Japanese wife, Ratna Sari Dewi Sukarno, is 38 years his junior.
    His name is sometimes spelled as ‘Soekarno’.
    His role as president was largely ceremonial until 1957.
    His theory of ‘Guided Democracy’ ended up turning Indonesia into an autocracy.
    It also threatened Indonesia’s unity and caused economic decline as well.
    When West Papua declared independence from the Netherlands, he invaded the region and annexed it two years later (1961).
    His role in a left-wing coup attempt, which was crushed by the army led by General Suharto, and the subsequent purge of communists, remains in dispute (October 1, 1965).
    He imprisoned a band called Koes Plus for their immoral lyrics, even though he himself had a reputation as a womanizer.
    He passed discrimination laws against Indonesia's Chinese minority.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He fought for Indonesia’s independence.
    The Dutch put him in prison for his political activities (1929), and later sent him to exile on Flores and then Sumatra (1933).
    He was renamed because of a childhood illness and Javanese custom.
    Despite the worsening situation under ‘Guided Democracy’, he retained support from ordinary Indonesians, especially farmers and factory workers.
    Suharto put him under house arrest.
    His daughter, Megawati Sukarnoputri, is Indonesia’s first female president.
    He was fluent in Indonesian, Sundanese, Balinese, Dutch, Arabic, French, English, German, and Japanese.
    He held the Bandung Conference to combat colonialism and imperialism (1955).
