Why he might be annoying:

The U.S. had to admit that they were spying on Russia.
His trial began August 17th and ended on the 19th.
He was sentenced to solitary confinement for 10 years (1960).
The U.S. made a deal to get Powers back by offering them an exchange for Russian spy Rudolf Abel (February 1962), ending both of their careers as spies.
Although not his fault, the stigma that the U.S. had to admit to spying, haunted his life.
His life ended when the helicopter he was piloting for KNBC-TV crashed.
He said: 'I was a pilot flying an airplane and it just happened that where I was flying made what I was doing spying.'

His plane was shot down over Russia (May 1, 1960), he ejected and was captured.
