He received a scholarship at Drake University, but dropped out after two years.
He was a mute clown on a puppet themed TV show.
He put his songwriting/bandleading career on hold to communicate by honking a horn - once for 'yes,' twice for 'no.'

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he started his first band.
He was an accomplished saxophonist.
He broke silence on the last episode of 'The Howdy Doody Show' and with a tear in his eye said, 'Goodbye, kids.'
'Howdy Doody' host 'Buffalo' Bob Smith stated he was the best Clarabell.
He led his band for years on Friday nights at Manhattan's famed Birdland Jazz Club.
