Her operatic performances were dramatic, intense and passionate.
She was forced to wed the old banker because he promised her father a lot of money in exchange for her hand in marriage.
The banker soon went bankrupt, leaving her the sole source of financial support.
Cecilia Bartoli's 2007 CD 'Maria' was in dedication to her most famous works.
