Tennis Player
    (July 2, 1904-October 12, 1996)
    Born in Paris, France
Birth name was Jean Rene Lacoste
Won singles titles at the French Championships (1925,1927,1929), Wimbledon (1925,1928) and the US Championships (1926,1927)
Won doubles titles at the French Championships (1925,1929) and Wimbledon (1925)
Co-founder of the Lacoste apparel company (1933)
    Nicknamed 'the Crocodile'
The walls of his family home had to be resurfaced each year because of the amount of time he spent hitting tennis balls against them.
He got his nickname after he bet his Davis Cup captain he would win a match, with a crocodile skin suitcase as the stakes. (Oddly, he lost the bet, but still got 'Crocodile' as a nickname.)
His tennis shirts became part of the stereotypical preppie uniform.
Preppies almost always refer to the crocodile logo on their Izod-Lacoste shirts as an alligator.
He was married to golfer Simone de la Chaume for 67 years until his death.
He was the first tennis player to incorporate weightlifting into his training regime.
He invented the first tubular steel tennis racquet (1963), which, marketed as the Wilson T-2000, became a best-seller and favorite of Jimmy Connors and Billie Jean King.
