Religious Figure
    ( -304)
Born in Antioch (site of modern day Antakya, Turkey)
Known as Marina by the Eastern Church
Often depicted with a dragon or cauldron of boiling water
    Patron saint of pregnant women
Feast day is July 20 (Catholic) or July 13 (Eastern)
There were doubts she ever existed as early as the fifth century.
One dubious legend claims she was swallowed by a dragon (the devil in disguise) but escaped by poking his insides with her cross.
She dedicated her virginity to God yet ended up the patron saint of childbirth.
She supposedly promised generous indulgences to anyone who spread her story.
As with many other popular saints, she was dropped from the canon in 1969.
Her mother died when she was a baby, and she was raised by her nurse.
Her father, a pagan priest, disowned her when she converted to Christianity.
A Roman prefect denounced her as a Christian when she refused his advances.
She survived attempts to burn then boil her to death, before she was decapitated.
She appeared before and advised Joan of Arc.
She has been identified with the Greek goddess Aphrodite.
