TV Series
The season featured a player named ‘Chicken.’
Because contestants went into the game with the clothes on their backs, many players roamed about in their underwear (including players viewers would rather not see in their undies).
Series editors added in Matrix-style ‘freeze shots’ in some of the show’s action sequences garnering mixed reactions among viewers.
The slogan ‘Outwit! Outplay! Outlast!’ was replaced by ‘Compete in Intelligence, Skill & Endurance!’ (written in Chinese characters)
The two Hidden Immunity Idols were never played.
The classic gross-out food challenge had contestants eating 1000-year old egg, eels, chicken fetuses and cooked baby turtles with shells.
Organizations dedicated to enforcing positive portrayals of gays in the media speculate that Survivor editors deliberately left out Todd's reaction to James' nude shower/’bare butt show’ because CBS feared backlash from conservative family groups.
The same ultra-cautious editors blurred out Amanda's butt constantly even though she was wearing a full-coverage swimsuit bottom.
The ‘Fight or Feast’ challenge returned, giving players the option of either feasting on cheeseburger or playing for immunity.
The China setting provided a spectacular backdrop and scenery for the game.
As with the Pearl Islands and Palau seasons, contestants entered the actual competition with the clothes on their backs.
It also featured a geographically diverse array of players coming from various parts of the US as the previous two seasons (Cook Islands and Fiji) had the majority of its contestants coming from California.
Eventually, players were given their actual swimsuits to use and wear.
For the first time, the series included contestants whose occupations are a professional poker player, a professional wrestler (Johnny Fairplay was an amateur wrestler at the time he appeared on Survivor), a 20-year old contestant and a gay Mormon flight attendant.
Some challenge sets featured replicas of the famous terracotta Lintong soldier statues.
Viewers voted James as their favorite player through the CBS website, awarding him $100,000 at the reunion show.
When Denise revealed that being on 'Survivor' got her displaced from her job, Mark Burnett awarded her $50,000 (partly to help her family out and because she was voted behind James as a favorite player.)
Jaime and Erik came out as a couple during the same reunion show with Erik admitting he's still a virgin!
For the first time, all three finalist received at least one vote from the jury.
