Beauty Contestant
    (October 1, 1990- )
    Born in Manhattan, Kansas
    Miss Kansas 2013
Miss America 2014 contestant (not in top ten)
    United States Army sergeant
Chemistry and Chinese major at Kansas State U
Like so many before her, she experienced sexual harassment in the workplace — as the only female mechanic in her military pool (the commander took her tormentors’ side).
At the swimsuit competition, she was fully open about her tattoos.
Her platform: Empowering Women: Overcoming Stereotypes and Breaking Barriers. Her natural hair color: mousy brown.
‘My original talent was going to be archery. I’m singing by default because there’s a clause against projectile objects.’ (Yeah, if the arrow goes off into the crowd…)
One Twitter user said of her in relation to winner Nina Davuluri, ‘The liberal Miss America judges won’t say this — but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values.’
She did not need to litigate to leave her military motor pool.
One of her tattoos, shown on her rib cage, is the Serenity prayer.
Another, on her left shoulder, is the US Army Dental Command insignia.
She credits her father, an Army dentist, for helping her overcome childhood bullying via outdoor sports (the motivation behind her platform).
Though a soprano in her school choir, she never had any formal opera training (her talent routine was ‘Nessun dorma,’ or ‘None shall sleep’) .
She, too, was disgusted by the reaction to Davuluri’s victory and promptly came to her defense in the wake of the Twitter backlash.
Only one other contestant was active in any branch of the US military.
