    She began playing long suffering moms when still in her 20s.
    Her popularity suffered when she took a break from film to return to the stage in the 1950s.
    She was too modest to promote herself, which may have cost her awards.
    She said, ‘To this day, I don’t know what shapes a Hollywood career.’
    Her screen persona was widely praised as dignified and refined.

    She was married for 35 years to the same man until his death.
    She made a comeback on TV in the 1970s and 1980s.
    The 2002 Academy Awards inexplicably overlooked her during its tribute to recently deceased stars.
