    Head coach for Coe College (1958-1962), University of North Dakota (1962-1967), Bowling Green State University (1967-1968), University of Minnesota (1968-1970), Cleveland Cavaliers (1970-1979), Boston Celtics (1979-1983), Houston Rockets (1983-1988), New Jersey Nets (1989-1992) and the Los Angeles Clippers (1994-1998)
    Two-time NBA Coach of the Year (1976, 1980)
    Named one of the Top 10 Coaches in NBA History (1996)
    He began his professional coaching career with a 15 game losing streak.
    His Rockets team that included Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Simpson lost to his previously coached Celtics in the 1986 NBA Finals in 6 games.
    His teams always missed the playoffs or got eliminated in the first round of the playoffs following the Rockets' second NBA Finals appearance.
    His head coaching career in the NBA ended with the all-time second most losses (1,106) behind Lenny Wilkens.
    He is the only coach in the Top 10 Coaches in NBA History not in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
    He was a drill instructor in the U.S. Marine Corps.
    He was the inaugural head coach of the Cavaliers.
    He coached the Cavaliers to their very first playoffs appearance in team history after five seasons being under .500 in which the team was called, 'The Miracle of Richfield.'
    He coached the Celtics team that won the 1981 NBA Finals which included Larry Bird, Robert Parish and Kevin McHale.
    He coached the Rockets to their second NBA Finals appearance.
