In 1623, English naval officer Christopher Levett founded a settlement here.
However, he abandoned the colony after it failed.
Two raids by Native Americans caused much damage and tension.
During an Independence Day celebration in 1866, a fire broke out causing extensive destruction to Portland.
The opening of the city's Maine Mall hurt local businesses.

The city is famous for its seafood and crawfish.
'Bon Apetit' magazine rated it as 'America's Foodiest Small Town.'
It has a very sophisticated railroad system.
Author Stephen King and actress Liv Tyler were famous residents of the city.
