Writer who lived in Greece in the latter half of the eighth century BC
Known for his writings on farming, astronomy, time keeping, and mythology
His only works to survive are 'Works and Days,' 'Theogny' and 'Catalog of Women'

Why he might be annoying:

Next to nothing is known about him personally.
He didn't write some of the poetry ascribed to him.
He sued his brother over some land twice and lost both times.
His surviving works are serious, almost to the point of being grim and basically tell people to work hard and accept life because you're screwed by the gods anyway.

Why he might not be annoying:

He got his gift for poetry from the Muses.
He has been compared to Homer in talent and importance in Greek literature.
He was able to write authoritatively both fiction and non-fiction, and on a variety of subjects.
