    His nicknames included 'Ol' Leather Tonsils,' 'the Baritone with Muscles' and 'the Voice with Hair on Its Chest.'
    His backing singers were dubbed 'the Moon Maidens' after his signature song, 'Racing with the Moon.'
    He appeared in ads for Camel Cigarettes and hosted their radio program 'Camel Caravan.'
    He was so enthusiastic a model railroader that he brought train kits with him on the tour bus.

    In high school, he was senior class president and voted 'most likely to succeed.'
    His recording of 'Riders in the Sky' was Billboard's Year-End Top Single of 1949.
    He was a licensed pilot, owned a Lockheed plane and co-wrote 'The Adventures of Mr. Putt Putt, ' a children's book about flying.
    He made public service announcements with Smokey the Bear.
    As a talent scout for RCA Records, he discovered Neil Sedaka.
    He has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for recordings and radio.
