    (November 26, 1909-March 28, 1994)
    Born in Slatina, Romania
Writer of the Theater of the Absurd
Plays include 'The Bald Soprano' (1950), 'The Lesson' (1951), 'The Chairs' (1952), 'Victims of Duty' (1953), 'Amedee, or How to Get Rid of It' (1954), 'Jack, or the Submission' (1955), 'The New Tenant' (1955), 'The Killer' (1958), 'Rhinoceros' (1959), 'Exit the King' (1962), 'Hunger and Thirst' (1964) and 'Macbett' (1972)
He shaved three years off his age, claiming 1912 as a birth year.
The dialogue in many of his plays consists of meaningless non-sequitors.
He objected to the label 'Theater of the Absurd,' saying he preferred 'Theater of Derision.'
He said, 'The basic problem is that if God exists, what is the point of literature? And if He doesn't exist, what is the point of literature?'
He was married to Rodica Burileanu for 58 years until his death.
'The Bald Soprano' has been running at one theater in Paris' Left Bank since 1957.
'Rhinoceros,' in which all but one of the inhabitants of a French town turn into rhinos, was a commentary on conformity and totalitarianism.
He was named an officer of the Legion of Honor (1984).
