    Founder and editor-in-chief of periodicals Sakartvelos Moambe (1863-1877) and Iveria (1877-1905)
    Member of Russian Duma (1906-1907)
    Killed by six assassins at Tsitsamuri, Georgia
    Canonized as Saint Ilia the Righteous by the Georgian Orthodox Church (1987)
    He was born into nobility.
    He had a ridiculously long last name.
    He briefly served as Stalin’s mentor when the latter was being trained as a priest in Tbilisi.
    There were various conspiracy theories surrounding his assassination, with one blaming radical Bolsheviks and another blaming the Okhrana.
    His mother died when he was ten years old. (May 4, 1848)
    Five years later, his father died, leaving him an orphan under his aunt’s care.
    His brother was killed during a Dagestani raid on his home province Kakheti.
    He was an ardent supporter of education, professional advancement, and Georgian nationalism and statehood, thus becoming a symbol of freedom in Georgia.
    He devotedly protected Georgian culture and language from Russification.
    Despite his nobility status, he greatly sympathized with democracy and the working class.
