    (July 1, 1934-May 26, 2008)
Best Director Academy Award for 'Out of Africa' (1985)
Directed 'Jeremiah Johnson,' 'The Way We Were,' 'Bobby Deerfield,' 'Tootsie,' 'The Firm,' 'Sabrina' and 'Random Hearts'
He looked like the former Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed Al-Sahhaf.
When Tom Cruise presented him with the 2000 John Huston Award, he described Pollack as a 'defender of artists' rights... a warrior.'
He filed a lawsuit against Danish television for screening 'Three Days of the Condor' in pan-and-scan (April 1997). The court decided the pan-and-scan airing was a 'mutilation' of the film and a violation of Pollack's right as an artist. The defendant, however, won on a technicality.
He was praised as a first-rate actor.
He met Robert Redford while appearing in 'War Hunt,' where Redford made his screen debut. They became friends and Pollack has directed him in seven films.
He was married to Claire Griswold for 45 years, with three children.
