Why he might be annoying:

He smoked.
For such an influential director, he is barely remembered today.
He was twice divorced.
He was nominated for an Oscar three times and never won.
He developed a bad relationship with Tallulah Bankhead when he tried to get Otto Preminger to replace her with Greta Garbo in 'The Royal Scandal (1945).'
He was known for playing practical jokes on the set of his films.
He said: 'I let the audience use their imaginations. Can I help it if they misconstrue my suggestions?'
His film 'Trouble in Paradise (1932),' was not approved for re-issue in 1935 when the Production Code was being enforced.

Why he might not be annoying:

His incredibly brilliant, universal style of filmmaking eventually became known as 'The Lubitsch Touch.'
Anybody who can make Tallulah Bankhead mad must be doing something right.
He directed Carole Lombard in her last film, 'To Be or Not To Be (1942).
He received an honorary Oscar in 1947 for his distinguished contributions to the art of motion picture.
He directed Mary Pickford in 'Rosita (1927),' a film that helped her demonstrate her versatility in films.
He is responsible for the legendary teaming of Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald.
Jeanette Macdonald said: 'To me, great people are always simple and Ernst was the simplest man I ever knew. He had no flaw in his greatness, no chichi, nor false vanity. On the set, he had a greatness of his art, but no 'artiness.'
He introduced the concept of dubbing whole scenes of movies during post production.
He has a star on the walk of fame.
He was voted #16 in Entertainment Weekly's greatest movie directors.
He died of a heart attack.
He made several films with Pola Negri.
